Small Batch, Big Impact: Big Spoon Roasters & Harper’s Home Collaborate to Help Families in Need

We’re so excited to announce a new partnership with Harper’s Home, a Durham-based nonprofit providing housing to families receiving care at Duke Children’s Hospital!

Starting today, we will donate a portion of proceeds from every jar purchased of our Lemon Cookie Cashew Butter to Harper’s Home.

The collaboration was sparked by a conversation between Harper’s Home and Big Spoon’s co-founders, Mark and Megan Overbay, who were inspired by the story Harper Harrell, a friend of their niece, who started a grassroots initiative with her mom to help families in need.

After being diagnosed with leukemia at eight years old, Harper endured a grueling care regimen, spending more than 50 nights in the hospital and undergoing countless treatments. Despite these challenges, Harper recognized how fortunate she was to live nearby in Durham, where she could return home to be with her family and her dog between treatments.

While Harper lived just minutes from Duke Children’s Hospital, others may not have that proximity. The financial strain of medical bills, missed work, and the high cost of lodging add additional layers of stress during an already overwhelming time. Motivated by this reality, Harper and her mother, Heather Hindin, founded Harper’s Home to provide families with free, comfortable, and conveniently located housing near the hospital. Harper’s Home has since grown into a nationally-recognized nonprofit, with a mission to ease the burden on families navigating pediatric medical care.

Inspired by Harper’s favorite Big Spoon nut butter, Lemon Cookie Cashew Butter, the partnership is a personal tie that reflects both Harper’s journey and our ongoing commitment to using food as a way to bring people together and give back. Our Lemon Cookie Cashew Butter will soon feature a newly designed co-branded label that highlights the collaboration and raises awareness for Harper’s Home’s mission, helping preserve stability, dignity, and togetherness for families during extended medical care.

We also collaborated with Harper to design a co-branded t-shirt , with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit. The design is anchored by one of Harper’s favorite phrases, “When life gives you lemons, make something great!”

“From the beginning, Big Spoon Roasters has been about more than making food we’re proud of—it’s about supporting the communities that support us,” said Mark and Megan Overbay, co-founders of Big Spoon Roasters. “We’ve always believed that food has the power to connect people and strengthen communities. Partnering with Harper’s Home allows us to extend that belief beyond the kitchen by supporting families through a product we love, and a mission we deeply respect.”

“When I was going through treatment, being close to home made all the difference for me. This partnership is helping more families have that same kind of comfort and support. And the lemon flavor makes it even more special, because it’s a reminder that something good can come out of a really hard situation,” said Harper Harrell.

In addition to the ongoing donation partnership, proceeds from Big Spoon’s 2026 Birthday Bash on May 16  where you can also meet Harper and Heather – will benefit Harpers Home. More about the Birthday Bash here: https://bigspoonroasters.com/pages/new-events
